The Samoyed is a substantial but graceful dog standing anywhere from 19 to a bit over 23 inches at the shoulder. Powerful, tireless, with a thick all-white coat impervious to cold, Sammies are perfectly beautiful but highly functional. Even their most delightful feature, a perpetual smile, has a practical function: The upturned corners of the mouth keep Sammies from drooling, preventing icicles from forming on the face. A Sammy sentenced to solitary confinement in the yard is a miserable and destructive creature. These are smart, social, mischievous dogs who demand love and attention. Sammies need structure in training. Teach them what’s expected of them early, and practice it with them often.
Samoyeds, the smiling sled dogs, were bred for hard work in the world’s coldest locales. In the Siberian town of Oymyakon, for instance, temperatures of minus-60 degrees are common. The Sammy’s famous white coat is thick enough to protect against such brutal conditions. Powerful, agile, tireless, impervious to cold, Sammies are drop-dead gorgeous but highly functional. Even their most delightful feature, a perpetual smile, has a practical function: The mouth’s upturned corners keep Sammies from drooling, preventing icicles from forming on the face.
Samoyeds are medium-sized, sturdy dogs with a distinctive fluffy white double coat that is thick, weather-resistant, and sheds heavily. They have a wedge-shaped head, dark almond-shaped eyes, and a characteristic “Sammy smile” created by slightly upturned lips. Their ears are triangular and erect, while their plumed tail curls over the back. They have a muscular yet agile build, standing 19–23.5 inches tall and weighing 35–65 pounds, with a graceful and energetic gait. Their expression is friendly and alert, reflecting their sociable nature.
Samoyeds enjoy being with their people and participating in family activities. They need some daily exercise and enjoy play sessions with their owner in a safely fenced yard or long walks on leash. The breed has a strong urge to run away and roam, and if loose a Sammie might travel for miles, putting himself at risk.
Samoyeds are friendly, gentle, and affectionate dogs known for their cheerful and sociable temperament. They thrive on human companionship, are highly adaptable, and get along well with children and other pets. Intelligent and playful, they can be stubborn at times but are eager to please, making them excellent family dogs with proper training and socialization. Their happy demeanor and constant “smile” reflect their loving and outgoing nature.
The Samoyed has a profuse double coat, with a longer outer coat of harsh hair and a soft, thick, wooly undercoat. Samoyeds shed quite a bit all the time, even more so during shedding season, which can occur once or twice a year. Daily brushing will help to remove dirt and loose hairs and keep the dog looking his best. Mats or tangles can be worked out with a slicker brush or metal comb. The nails should be trimmed every three to four weeks or as needed.
Samoyeds are generally healthy dogs, and responsible breeders test their stock for health conditions such as hip dysplasia and eye and cardiac disorders. The Samoyed’s teeth should be brushed often, using a toothpaste designed for dogs. Regular visits to the vet for checkups and parasite control help to ensure the dog a long, healthy life.
The Samoyede people lived in tents and huddled for warmth with their dogs on brutal Arctic nights. This unusual degree of dog-and-master closeness forged a tight bond between Sammies and humankind. A Sammy sentenced to solitary confinement in the backyard is a miserable’and destructive’creature. These are smart, social, mischievous dogs who demand love and attention. Sammies need a firm but loving hand in training.
The Samoyed should do well on a high-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared with your veterinarian’s supervision and approval. Any diet should be appropriate to the dog’s age (puppy, adult, or senior). Some dogs are prone to getting overweight, so watch your dog’s calorie consumption and weight level. Treats can be an important aid in training, but giving too many can cause obesity. Learn about which human foods are safe for dogs, and which are not. Check with your vet if you have any concerns about your dog’s weight or diet. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times.

I cannot say enough good things about getting my puppy through Snowy White Companions. About a month ago, I started looking for Samoyed puppies and found a beautiful litter from a breeder, Mrs. Harris. I spoke with her on the phone, and she was wonderful—answering all my questions patiently. I set up an appointment to visit as soon as I could. I was 99% sure Scooter was the puppy for us, but they let us visit with all the puppies in the litter, including the mother and grandmother! He came home practically potty-trained and is the most social, well-behaved puppy. All the puppies looked happy and healthy, raised with children on their beautiful farm. Scooter had been vet-checked before we got him and passed our own vet visit with flying colors! I wouldn’t hesitate to get another puppy from them in the future—I’m so happy with the entire experience.
I can’t recommend Snowy White Companions highly enough! We have two puppies from them, and they are absolute delights—healthy, happy, and so well socialized. They’re inquisitive little bundles of fun and an absolute credit to the professional and loving way Snowy White Companions Paradise goes about their business of breeding. If you are considering owning a Samoyed, you really cannot go wrong with them!
We received our Samoyed, Lady, from Snowy White Companions. She has been such a great addition to our family. She loves being playful with the children but is also loving and enjoys cuddling next to us in the evening. She is a quick learner—potty trained well, picks up commands easily, and is doing great with further training. I came across Snowy White Companions on Google. Rosa was so wonderful with communication and accommodated us perfectly in getting Lady to us. Lady had to be flown to us, and Rosa made sure everything was in order and that she would be safe on the flight. When she arrived, Lady was in perfect health, clean, and happy. Rosa was great about answering all of our questions, getting back to us quickly, and even followed up to ensure Lady was adjusting well. I would highly recommend her and Snowy White Companions to anyone looking for a healthy, loving family pet! They are wonderful to work with and truly care about their dogs.
